Seventh ULLA Summer School for Postgraduate
Training and Research (Uppsala)
Welcome to ULLA!
You may not know it, but ULLA is not just a
Consortium, not just a Summer School, but also the name of
a beautiful young woman, celebrated in an old song from around
1770 by the famous Swedish poet and song writer Carl Michael
Bellman: Ulla, my dear Ulla! Coming here you may meet
her! If not you may still enjoy the light summer nights that
Bellman describes so charmingly in his songs!
Approaching Uppsala from Arlanda Airport, as
most of you will do, means to pass some twenty-five kilometres
of a dark forest. Then, suddenly the landscape changes character,
a country-side with many cultural traditions opens up, you
will in a distance see two spires belonging to the thirteenth
century church. You may have imagined that savages inhabited
this land at that time, but - believe it or not - here our
university was founded in 1477!
This is the seventh ULLA Summer School since
the first one in London 1993, and it has since then been hosted
by any of the founding Schools, in Uppsala (1995), Leiden/Amsterdam
(1997), London (2001) - and by the newcomers in ULLA - Copenhagen
(1999) and Paris Sud (2003).
We hope this Summer School will be as successful
as the previous ones! You will occupy some 90.000 square metres;
it is Biomedical Centre, the largest research building in
Northern Europe with great facilities, still pleasantly embedded
in the green surroundings of Uppsala. You will have access
to the Student Nations - the traditional student clubs - to
mingle with your fellow PhD students or whoever regular student
may remain in town during the summer break. Access to the
pleasant surroundings in and outside Uppsala as well!
There has been a local organization committee
headed by Kjell Wikvall, in which also Eva Björkman,
Eva Brittebo, Anders Backlund, Josefina Hellström, Johan
Carlfors and myself has participated. Raising money, planning
as we hope up-to-date courses, making your staying and leasure
time pleasant have been important tasks for all of us during
the latest year.
So, please come here, and enjoy every minute
in Northern Light when the night never really turns dark,
and come back to work every morning, fresh and curious to
take part in excellent courses!
