Seventh ULLA Summer School for Postgraduate Training and Research (Uppsala)

INTRODUCTION

We are pleased to offer you this programme "Seventh ULLA Summer School for Postgraduate Training and Research" taking place at The Biomedical Centre (BMC) in Uppsala from the 5th to 13th of July, 2005.

ULLA is a European University Consortium for Postgraduate Training and Research in the Pharmaceutical Sciences consisting of the following institutions:

· The Faculty of Pharmacy, Uppsala University
· The School of Pharmacy, University of London
· The Leiden/Amsterdam Centre for Drug Research
· The Faculty of Pharmacy, Université Paris-Sud
· The Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences

The aim of ULLA is to provide PhD students from participating institutions the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with those conducting research in similar fields. The expectation is a strong network of colleagues in pharmacy throughout Europe. ULLA brings together established experts and young researchers giving all involved access to expertise within different pharmaceutical disciplines.

ULLA activities therefore include exchange of undergraduate, postgraduate and staff members. The most important event is, however, the ULLA Summer School, which is taking place every second year at one of the participating institutions.

Summer Schools
The inaugural ULLA Summer School was hosted by London in 1993, followed by Schools in Uppsala (1995), Leiden (1997), Copenhagen (1999), again in London (2001), in Paris (2003) and now it is Uppsala again.

Summer Schools represent the integration of the teaching and research programmes of the participating institutions. The PhD education is an important feature of all six institutions and the ULLA Summer School has, therefore become an integral part of the study programme for all PhD students in the first two years of their training.

Programme of the summer School and Participation
A range of courses will be offered at the Summer School. New for this year is that the courses are collected under thirteen themes. Theme coordinators, course leaders and instructors represent the ULLA institutions, other institutions of higher education, and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The themes and courses will cover a broad spectrum of disciplines and subjects within the pharmaceutical sciences.
